Elaine (Bymers) Kettwig, 87, of Union City, CA, died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Valley Memorial Hospital in Pleasanton, CA. A
memorial service will be held May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Graham Hitch
Funeral Home. A committal service will be held in the Crary Cemetery in
July.
Elaine, the oldest of 11 children, was born Jan. 13, 1918 to
William and Alice Bymers in Doyon, ND. As a small child, she moved to
Crary, ND. She graduated from Crary High School in 1936.
On Dec. 5, 1937 she married Joseph L. Kettwig in Oakland, CA. They
lived in Alameda, CA, when they were first married, later moving to
Oakland, CA and last to Union City. She continued living in Union City
until she entered Bethany Memorial Home in January of 2004. Joseph died
Sept. 21, 1992. Elaine was a foster parent for 25 years when
they lived in Oakland. She loved all the kids and heard from many after
they were grown. She is survived by a son, Joseph Kettwig, Jr.
of Livermore, CA; three granddaughters, Erin Kettwig, Lynn (Dominic)
Pattinato and Joanne Nelson; three step-grandchildren, Randy, Robbie
and Chris Cellete; three great-grandchildren, Joseph and Amanda
Pattinato and Jessica Nelson; five sisters, Viola Hardy of Newark, CA,
Alice Atherton of Devils Lake, ND, Irma Wilson of Sparks, NV, Arliss
(Richard) Allums of Antioch, CA and Corrine (Don) Carroll of Yuma, AZ;
one brother, Bergeth Bymers of Devils Lake; three brothers-in-law, Al
Hahn of Yuma, AZ, Elwood Jensen and Bob Cellete of Crystal, MN; and one
sister-in-law, Nancy Bymers of Spokane, WA. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; daughter, Karen Nelson;
step-daughter, Leona Cellete; two brothers, Donald and Jack Bymers;
three sisters, Jessie Frith, Shirley Hahn and Darla Jensen;
sister-in-law, Tillie Bymers; and three brothers-in-law, Hugh Hardy,
Paul Atherton and Bill Wilson. Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, will be handling the local arrangements.

Elaine F. Kettwig died April 24, 2005 in Pleasanton. She was 87. The Minnesota native had lived in Union City for 35 years
and Oakland for 34 years. She was a homemaker, foster
parent, and childcare provider. Her affiliations included
Sons of Norway, Snorre Lodge #61 of Hayward. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Joseph L. Kettwig, Jr. of
Livermore, a brother Bus Bymers of North Dakota; sisters
Viola Hardy of Newark, Alice Atherton of North Dakota, Irma
Wilson of Nevada, Billie Allums of Antioch, and Corrine
Carr of Arizona, three grandchildren and two great
grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years,
Joseph Kettwig in 1992, a daughter Karen Nelson in 2001,
and three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sat., May 7 at
Graham- Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton. Burial
will be in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Donations in her name
