Uffa Rients (1917-2005)

FLANAGAN — Uffa L. Rients, 87, of Flanagan, died at 10:55 a.m. Thursday (July 7, 2005) at Good Samaritan Home, Flanagan.

His funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Petri Lutheran Church, Flanagan, with the Rev. Paul Lellelid officiating. Burial will be in St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, with full military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Flanagan, and for one hour before services Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Petri Lutheran Church or Good Samaritan Home, Flanagan.

He was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Minonk Township, the son of Louis and Gesena Kettwich Rients. He married Esther A. Rustman on Sept. 28, 1941, in Flanagan. She survives.

 

Also surviving are four daughters, Janice (Stan) Weber, Minonk; Joyce Aggertt, San Jose; Judy (Lynn) Messamore, Norfolk, Va.; and Joan Rients, Flanagan; one son, Jeff (Patti) Rients, Flanagan; one brother, Alvin (Irma Jean) Rients, Flanagan; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Rients, Flanagan; and Ardythe Rustman, Pontiac; two brothers-in-law, Harold (Minnie) Rustman, Streator; and Paul Marshall, Flanagan; 11 grandchildren, Tom Weber, John Weber, Jay Rients, Steven Messamore, Michelle Wiseman, Karen Conrad, Jennifer Aggertt, Kimberly Smith, Gale Frisby, Jessica Rients and Jenna Rients; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Joe Aggertt; two brothers, Tjark Rients and LeRoy Rients; and two grandchildren, Michael L. Messamore and Julie Ann Aggertt.

He was a life long member of St. Petri Lutheran Church, Flanagan, where he served on the church council in several capacities, and was on the St. Petri Mission Society. He was a life long farmer and a member of the Livingston County Farm Bureau.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, where he received two Bronze Stars. He served in the Philippine Liberation, where he received a Bronze Star. He also received a Good Conduct Medal and the Combat & Expert Infantry Man Badges. He was in the 136th Infantry, 33rd Division, Company D from April 1942 to November 1945. He was a member of the Flanagan and Long Point American Legions.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, farming and most of all his family and his faith.
