Paul Eilert Kettwig, 88, died on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at home. Paul was born on Aug. 21, 1921, in Waterloo, IA, son of Oliver Ludwig and Minnie (Youngman) Kettwig. Paul married Alice Mary Ingegnosi in Rockford, IL, in August of 1947. Alice died in February of 1978. He later married Mary Ellen Matthews on Jan. 13, 1979, in Elkhorn, WI. Paul was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving during WWII, and owned and operated Kettwig’s Paint Bucket in Whitewater with his brother, Robert. Paul was a member of Cargill United Methodist Church. He also took great joy in water-walking and in the friends he met through the Janesville YMCA water-walking program. Paul enjoyed two long, loving marriages, and was a wonderful, supportive father. “Tall Paul” was a gentle, caring man, who will be missed by his family and friends. Paul was a part of the “greatest generation” who quietly went about his life. Those that met him aspired to be more like him. His lasting legacy will live on, as we reflect on how much we learned from him and how our days will be better because we knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Kettwig of Janesville; his daughter, Linda (John) Wrobel of Arbor Vitae, WI; two stepchildren, Sandra Lee Garcia of Orland, CA, and Larry (Megan) Matthews of Whitewater, WI; a sister, Marianne “Punky” (Jerry) Steck of Whitewater, WI; and five stepgrandchildren: Raquel Garcia, Jennifer Garcia, Brandon Tschacher, Benjamin Matthews, and Andra Matthews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Alice, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard; and a sister, Joyce Simon.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at CARGILL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Janesville, with Rev. Forrest Wells officiating. A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the CHURCH. Military rites will be provided by Kienow-Hilt VFW Post #1621.
